Put Your Best Foot Forward: 20th Annual Back-to-School Shoe & Backpack Giveaway
Each year, AEG Oakland hosts the Back-to-School Shoe Giveaway to help defray school expenses for Alameda County families with an average annual income below $15,000. This year AEG Oakland donated nearly 2,500 pairs of shoes – meeting our goal and surpassing last year’s Shoe Giveaway total of 2,000 pairs.
The event, which is co-sponsored by Oakland’s First African Methodist Episcopal Church, grows every year with the help of generous sponsors, including Kaiser Permanente, Golden One Credit Union, AT&T and others. More than 5,000 attendees participated in the event, which also featured educational activities and resources designed to promote healthy living, financial stability, and community services. For the first time, AEG Oakland hosted the Shoe Giveaway inside of Oracle Arena, providing an additional element of excitement during the Golden State Warriors’ award-winning season. Children and parents alike enjoyed locker room tours, and all three of our sports teams – the Oakland Raiders, the Golden State Warriors, and the Oakland Athletics – were involved with the event.
